Pittsylvania County Animal Shelter

20,100 SF

Pittsylvania County’s former shelter was small at around 3,100 SF and thus was severely limited in it’s capacity. As a result, the shelter could only handle a portion of the stray dogs in the county. The remainder of the dogs and all cats were sent to the Danville Humane Society. The County then voted to renovate a former automotive dealership building into a new shelter to handle all of their animal needs and provide an environment that would focus on adoption.

The project consisted of the construction of an addition on the front of the existing building. The addition serves as the main entrance, adoption area and administrative portion of the new facility. A portion of the existing building was renovated into the animal holding areas of the shelter and includes a sallyport, intake area, isolation and observation areas for the dogs and cats, animal kitchen, laundry, euthanasia and storage rooms.

The new shelter contains 33 dog kennels and 45 cages or condos for the cats. The shelter typically serves 1,700 to 1,900 animals annually, with 60% of the population being canines.
